The rapid increase of industry-sponsored clinical research towards developing countries has led to potentially complex ethical issues to assess. There is scarce evidence about the perception of these participants about the ethical compliance, security, and protection. We sought to evaluate and contrast the awareness and perception of participants and non-participants of industry-sponsored research trials on ethical, safety, and protection topics. A Cases-control survey conducted at twelve research sites in México. Previous and current participants of ISRT as well as non-participants with (...) one of four chronic diseases, were asked to complete the survey which focused on ethical compliance and protection issues of ISRT, and the perception of participating in a trial. A total of 604 cases and 604 controls were surveyed. Cases significantly answered that ethics committees are aware of what is happening in studies, and that medical care of industry-sponsored research trials is better than their usual medical care. The same proportion of cases and controls thought patients must receive economical reimbursement for participating in a research study. The informed consent of the pharmaceutical clinical trial was fully read by 90.4% of the cases. Most cases were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall study participation. Previous and current participants of industry-sponsored research trials have a more positive attitude towards ethics committees, the quality of medical care of the research trials, and the main purpose of economical reimbursements, when compared to non-participants. The health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed limitations in health systems worldwide, making it necessary to establish a bioethical framework that provides tools to drive health professionals’ decision-making amid scarce health resources. Bioethical models such as principlism, utilitarianism, and personalism seek to focus clinical decisions on respect for people’s rights and dignity, thus protecting the medical practice. Personalism provides a person-centered approach to respect for human dignity during health emergencies to avoid giving material meaning to the individual. The origin of chordates and the consequent genesis of vertebrates were major events in natural history. The amphioxus (lancelet) is now recognised as the closest extant relative to the stem chordate and is the only living invertebrate that retains a vertebrate‐like development and body plan through its lifespan, despite more than 500 million years of independent evolution from the stem vertebrate. The inspiring data coming from its recently sequenced genome confirms that amphioxus has a prototypical chordate genome with respect to (...) gene content and structure, and even chromosomal organisation. Pushed by joint efforts of amphioxus researchers, amphioxus is now entering a new era, namely its maturation as a laboratory model, through the availability of a large amount of molecular data and the advent of experimental manipulation of the embryo. These two facts may well serve to illuminate the hidden secrets of the genetic changes that generated, among other vertebrates, ourselves. (shrink)

Recent work by Kahan et al. (2017) on the psychology of motivated numeracy in the context of intracultural disagreement suggests that people are less likely to employ their capabilities when the evidence runs contrary to their political ideology. This research has so far been carried out primarily in the USA regarding the liberal–conservative divide over gun control regulation. In this paper, we present the results of a modified replication that included an active reasoning intervention with Western European participants regarding both (...) the hierarchy–egalitarianism and individualism–collectivism divides over immigration policy (n = 746; considerably less than the preregistration sample size). We reproduce the motivated numeracy effect, though we do not find evidence of increased polarization of high-numeracy participants. (shrink)

The synthesis between death and vocation that has in the structure ‘being toward vocation’ its conclusion is the key to human finitude according to Ortega y Gasset. This means, against Heidegger’s ‘being toward death’, that in Ortega death, far from being understood as a priori horizon of meaning of existence and sign of human finitude, is an essential ingredient -and a posteriori- of human life which, together with the human vocation, essentially defines existence. The development of that synthesis obliges us (...) to explain two fundamental problems that form part of the essence of death. The first is the mystery of death, which is basically due to two questions: the enigmatic ceasing to be that describes death, and the particular fact that death is simultaneously exterior and interior to life, strange and familiar. Asperger's syndrome is a pervasive developmental condition characterized by features of autism. As observed in clinical practice, individuals with Asperger's syndrome present an impairment related to inflexibility in their everyday routine, an immediate manner of experiencing and relating, and difficulties in estimating periods of time. Following a phenomenological perspective, this study is an attempt to examine these aforementioned aspects in terms of temporality. Thirteen participants with Asperger's syndrome, from 13 to 20 years old, were interviewed about their experience of periods (...) of time, personal history, their past, present and future; and their concept of time and finitude. After the interviews, it was possible to identify three general themes which emerged in the invariant aspects of their experience of time: factual experience of present and future dimensions, chronological time and the past experience. Moreover, participants' descriptions evidenced aspects of experience based on the specificity of lived facts and a sense of time specifically related to what was lived in the past. (shrink)

IntroductionCardiology is characterized by its state-of-the-art biomedical technology and the predominance of Evidence-Based Medicine. This predominance makes it difficult for healthcare professionals to deal with the ethical dilemmas that emerge in this subspecialty. This paper is a first endeavor to empirically investigate the axiological foundations of the healthcare professionals in a cardiology hospital. Our pilot study selected, as the target population, cardiology personnel not only because of their difficult ethical deliberations but also because of the stringent conditions in which they (...) have to make them. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reconsider clinical ethics and Value-Based Medicine. This study proposes a qualitative analysis of the values and the virtues of healthcare professionals in a cardiology hospital in order to establish how the former impact upon the medical and ethical decisions made by the latter.ResultsWe point out the need for strengthening the roles of healthcare personnel as educators and guidance counselors in order to meet the ends of medicine, as well as the need for an ethical discernment that is compatible with our results, namely, that the ethical values developed by healthcare professionals stem from their life history as well as their professional education.ConclusionWe establish the kind of actions, communication skills and empathy that are required to build a stronger patient-healthcare professional relationship, which at the same time improves prognosis, treatment efficiency and therapeutic adhesion. Heidegger entiende la muerte como la posibilidad más auténtica del ser humano: el ser humano está ahí para morir. En Unamuno, el _querer vivir_ del hambre de inmortalidad se funda sobre la conciencia del _tener que morir_; y, a su vez, el _tener que morir_ implica el hambre de inmortalidad. Este es el sentimiento trágico de la vida. (...) La muerte absoluta implica la falta completa de sentido. Así, el ser humano sería una pasión inútil. En el hambre de inmortalidad entonces hay una profunda afirmación del sentido de la vida como lucha por el sentido. Aunque la nada nos espere, hagamos que sea una injusticia, es decir, actúa de modo que no merezcas morir, que merezcas la eternidad y el sentido. Contra el nihilismo metafísico de Mefistófeles, así se fundamenta la esperanza. Por esto, la pasión es útil, porque solo podemos relacionarnos con la eternidad y el sentido mereciéndolos. (shrink)

Este artículo afirma que la fenomenología, realización de la idea de filosofía como ciencia estricta, es la respuesta husserliana a la crisis epistemológica y ontológica que padecen la ciencia y la filosofía de su tiempo. Pero el sentido último de esta ciencia estricta fenomenológica es atender los problemas existenciales del ser humano debidos al divorcio establecido entre razón y existencia por la crisis Fin de Siècle. El proyecto fenomenológico ilustrado tiene para Husserl sobre todo un sentido práctico/existencial: fundamentar la idea (...) de Europa como ideal de una existencia humana basada en ideas de razón, con sentido. La respuesta a la crisis sólo puede ser la filosofía como ciencia estricta fundada sobre la experiencia antepredicativa del mundo de la vida en la que se nos dan las cosas mismas, ‘lo que’ son primariamente. La ciencia volverá a tener significado humano cuando se fundamente sobre ese ámbito originario de experiencia, verdadera fuente de todo sentido y categoría. (shrink)

La poesía de Juan Ramón Jiménez pretende volver a unir palabra y cosa, separadas por la crisis fin-de-siècle del lenguaje. Para lograrlo adopta un realismo mágico trascendente. El sujeto poético desvela el sentido oculto de las cosas y consigue aumentar el mundo mediante la conversión de la palabra poética en símbolo. La poesía piensa la realidad con la intuición, la cual se expresa simbólicamente. Esta es la dimensión gnoseológica de lo simbólico. Pero el símbolo tiene valor ontológico porque él mismo (...) es la cosa simbolizada. De este modo, la hace ser y conecta palabra y cosa. (shrink)

El objetivo de este artículo es pensar la esencia del arte en la filosofía de Ortega a partir de su libro La deshumanización del arte. El arte es para Ortega ante todo, como forma de la cultura, una interpretación del texto vital. Pero La deshumanización del arte no es un manifiesto de las vanguardias artísticas de principios del s. XX, sino una meditación sobre la esencia del arte. La meditación es la forma de pensar de la filosofía de la razón (...) vital de Ortega. En La deshumanización del arte, Ortega concibe el arte como isla ingrávida rodeada de realidad. Esto significa que el arte esencialmente es arte artístico, es decir, desrealización de la realidad y realización de la irrealidad. (shrink)

Contra el dualismo platónico, el arte muestra que la virtualidad y la realidad no están enfrentadas. La obra de arte es virtualidad, pero no está ontológicamente separada de la realidad que representa. La virtualidad estética según Gadamer supone un crecimiento del ser de la realidad, precisamente hacia su propia verdad. La obra de arte por tanto no representa el ser de la realidad sino lo que puede ser.

Este ensayo propone un concepto de “interés legítimo”, un elemento para la procedencia de la acción de amparo que fue introducido en las reformas a la Constitución del año 2011. Se concluye que el interés jurídico, a diferencia del legítimo, supone la existencia de un derecho dentro del status jurídico del particular, mientras que el legítimo supone una afectación indirecta a su status jurídico, en la medida en que sufre una afectación por ser parte de una colectividad que de manera (...) abstracta tiene interés en que el orden jurídico opere de manera efectiva. The article critically develops Nietzsche's presence in Heidegger's second great work, Contributions to Philosophy. Heidegger considers Nietzsche the last metaphysicist. However, being Western Metaphysics' zenith is the greatest thing that can be said of a thinker, since being the one who brings to completion a school of thought makes one, at the same time, the precursor of the ‘other’ begining and thus his concept of God's dead, nihilism and truth really can open the door to a kind of post-metaphysical thought, (...) as Heidegger would say, the thought of the history od being. Therefore, between Nietzsche's "God is dead" and Heidegger's "last God" there exists continuity and parallelism that needs future development. (shrink)

We point out many of the insights of Stenhouse's approach, but also some of (...) its disadvantages which subtly encourage a popularist form of relativism. We suggest the substitution of procedural neutrality with a different approach, that of critical affirmation. Here the teacher advocates a stance alongside everyone else. This, however, is done in a way that affirms pupils, and their right to personal views, whilst subjecting all views, including the teacher's own, to a close scrutiny, especially regarding implications for the views of others. Si la filosofía de la razón vital de Ortega concedió tanta importancia a los asuntos artísticos fue precisamente porque ella misma se constituyó como una filosofía estética. Ahora bien, es necesario aclarar en qué sentido puede afirmarse esto último, pues una mala comprensión del carácter estético de la filosofía de la razón vital podría poner en peligro la pretensión de racionalidad que Ortega defendió siempre para la filosofía.

Siguiendo parcialmente el pensamiento de Hugo Assmann, quien plantea las preguntas basales de cómo educar y cómo aprender, se postula que se aprende durante toda la vida y mediante todas las formas de vida, coincidiendo ello con la facultad de los seres vivos de la autoorganización. Aprender resulta así un proceso donde coinciden los procesos vitales con los procesos de conocimiento. Surge de ello una biopedagogía que, asentada en el placer de aprender, está en condiciones de reencantar la educación. This article explores the complex bond between human life and the force of law from the contributions made by Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. Both authors realize the transit of the legal system from sovereign power —which brings death by spilling the blood of men as a symbol of the naked life— to the analytics of biopower —which grants life but lets the race die—.
